Mobile apps can be a great way for kids to pass the time on a long road trip, on a rainy afternoon or even as a distraction for the ten minutes you’re on the phone with the plumber. The down side to these apps is they can also quickly loose their appeal. After spending the morning begging you to purchase the most amazing, best ever app in the whole world for only $2.99 little Johnny may tire of it quickly and never play with it again. Worse yet, they may ignore it immediately after purchase not playing with it at all! At $0.99 – $2.99 per app that adds up quickly.
Wanting to supply my sons with apps that would entertain them as well as be educational without costing me a dime became a fun adventure for me. Since I limit the amount of screen time my kids have I wanted to make sure it was quality screen time. These are three of the fun free apps my boys play with the most.
My Top Three Fun Free Apps For Kids
If you looking for a fun way to introduce your kids to number, letter and pattern recognition this is it! There are five simple yet fun games in this app that features fun loving silly characters that my boys and your kids will love.
The “Balloon Blowup”, game (shown to your right) teaches kids to recognize the difference between a larger and smaller group of items. Your child is asked to identify the larger group and pop the bubble! “Heat Wave”, is a game where your kids connect pipes in alphabetical order. Once they have connected their pipes they can turn on the water and fill up the swimming hole. In “Shape Shack”, they have to select the right picture to complete a pattern. With “Mushroom Bounce”, your preschooler will be able to practice both number recognition and basic counting as they help the little critter bounce from mushroom to mushroom finding his way to the pond. Finally, in “Shape Shake”, they will be given the challenge of connecting the right letter to the right picture word. For example they will connect the letter “G” to the to picture of a goat.
Funbrain Jr is perfect for age 2 & up. It is easy to down load from iTunes or the Apple App Store. It is meant to be plaid on the iPhone, IPod and iPod Touch.
This app comes directly from the creators of Sesame Street’s The Monster at the End of This Book. If you are at all familiar with it then you know this should be one fun, and silly game. The games and activities in this app are also monster themed and is geared towards teaching kids 3 and older new worlds and how to spell them. None of the activities have time limits nor do they keep score. This app is all about teaching new words, vocabulary and laying the foundation for spelling.
The one downside to this game is the adds, as it is frustrating to my boys when they accidentally click on it activating them. This game is $0.99 to buy and remove the ads.
It is compatible with Android Smartphones, iPad, and IPod Touch.
Jesus Loves me is a beautifully done app that helps teach our children Bible versus and songs. It is like having Sunday school at your fingertips all week long.
There are four different areas the kids can explore while using this app. First of course is the Bible verses, while currently there are only 6 for the children to learn they are easy to understand and taught in such a way that our children can grasp the concept of what is being taught. There is a music video, it is absolutely beautiful. The music song Jesus loves me is sang by children and you are swept away by the animation of the forest critters waking in the morning, but you don’t have to take my word for it the video is on YouTube. A karaoke area allows kids to sing along in different styles of music. Finally there is a memory game which uses some of the familiar characters and symbols found through the app.
The Jesus Loves Me app is great for little ones ages 12 months all the way up to preschool. This app is also available to use on your Android and Apple mobile devices.
These are just three of my son’s favorite apps that they use here at home.
