For the past couple of months I have been using Swagbucks and earning Amazon gift cards that I will be using to help buy Christmas gifts for the boys. Since I am having success with it, I thought I would do a review for anyone who may be interested.
What Is Swagbucks?
I’m sure many of you already have an idea of what Swagbucks is, but for those of you who don’t, let me explain. Swagbucks says they are a “loyalty program” website that provides you with a way to earn rewards for doing things online that you normally do everyday. You are rewarded with their virtual currency called swag bucks which you can then turn into gift cards or cash through PayPal. Swagbucks is a very reputable company boasting an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau, and has been around since 2008. They have reportedly paid out over $70 million dollars in rewards to the more than 12 million users of their site.
How Can Swagbucks Afford To Pay Out To Their Users?
Swagbucks earn their revenue through a combination of their own advertisers and some earnings from Google and Ask.com as well. They then share a small portion of that income with you, the user, in the form of swag bucks. In order for you to make money from them they must ultimately earn more from the activities you participate in than you do. In the end however, it is a win-win situation.
How Do I Earn On Swagbucks?
There are several ways to earn swag bucks and each activity pays in different amounts. Many other reviewers will say that “it is a search engine at heart” and encourage you to spend most of your time using it as a way to earn your swag bucks. I however disagree and will show you how to maximize your earning potential, but we will talk about that later. For now know that while Swagbucks does have a search engine component to it, it is much more than that. You can earn swag bucks through the different activities listed below.
Voting In The Daily Poll. Everyday you have the opportunity to vote once in the daily poll, it takes only a few seconds and you earn 1 swag buck for your vote.
Find Swag Codes. Swag codes are an easy way to earn extra swag bucks. One or two are posted throughout the day and are typically available to use for a few hours before expiring. These codes can be found on their Facebook page, their instagram page, they are sometimes tweeted, and even put on the SwagBucks blog page. These codes can range from 1 – 10 bucks depending on the day and of course how generous they are feeling that day. Most of the time I ‘ve seen them between 3-5 swag bucks.
Surveys. There are several survey opportunities available for you to do. They can take from a few minutes to almost and hour to complete and range in value of swag bucks you will earn from each survey. Personally I don’t do these as I think they take to long to complete and the reward is too small for the effort it takes.
Shopping Online. If you, like me, enjoy shopping online this is an easy way to gain additional swag bucks. Not everything you buy online will earn you swag bucks but it is always worth taking a look. For example at the time of this writing you can earn 5 swag bucks for every dollar you spend on Amazon.com so if you spent $100.00 you would get 500 swag bucks or enough to earn a $5.00 Amazon gift card (450 swag bucks) with a few to spare.
Searching The Internet. Searching the internet is another way you can earn on swag bucks. Your searches will bring up results submitted from Google and Ask.com. The amount of swag bucks you earn seem to be random and I have received between 3 and 12 swag bucks for a search. There are lots of theories out there on how these bucks are awarded, when they are awarded, how many times a day and how often. Personally I have not found them to hold much water. If you want to get paid for searching the internet there are other programs out there like the Bing Rewards Program, that pay much more for that activity. The exception to that may be Mega Swag Bucks Day which is every Friday. On that day only you will earn more for web searches then the rest of the week. Still it’s a toss up for me.
Complete Special Offers. On the front page of Swagbucks you will see all of their special offers available for you with the amount of swag bucks you can earn by taking advantage of those offers. I have seen those swagbuck rewards range from 2SB (swag bucks) all the way up to 4,800SB. I don’t spend a lot of time in this area as I’m very conservative with what I buy online. An example of a special offer I took advantage of was to recently purchase a new Sam’s Club membership. Through the offer they had I was able to get the member ship for free and even made money on the deal. I purchased a Sam’s Club membership that was on sale for $45.00 with it I received a $20.00 gift card, coupons for free products totaling $23.00 and 450 swag bucks which earned me a $5.oo Amazon gift card. In the end I made $3.50 on the deal.
No Obligation Special Offers. There are about six special offers every day that you can go through and then at the end receive 2SB it only takes a minute and there is no information to fill out. Just click through them and you’re done.
Play Games. Playing games is a very popular way for members to earn swag bucks. Personally I don’t do this often as I think it is too much effort for what you are awarded. However, if I am close to meeting my daily goal and need a few more bucks, then I will play a game or two.
Watch Short Videos. Watching short videos called the Daily Crave, and Encrave. If you have an Android or Apple device you can watch the videos through the Swagbucks TV app (total 36SB per day), the EntertaniNow app (total 18SB per day), Lifestylz.tv app (total 18SB per day), sport.ly app (total 18SB/day). They also have two new apps coming soon, the movieclips and IndyMusic.tv you will also be able to earn swag bucks from them as well. Now I know what you thinking, who has time to sit around and watch all that junk all day. Your right, you don’t. And neither do I. However, I’ll show you how to take advantage of these videos and earn SB from them in my next post.
Once you hit your daily allotment of videos you will not earn any more swagbucks for the day, the clock however starts over at 12AM PST.
Other Ways To Earn. There are lots of other ways to earn swag bucks including: cutting coupons, trading in old cellphones, video games and video consoles, SwagBucks Sweepstakes and inviting your friends to join Swagbucks.
One quick note about Swagbuck Sweepstakes. I never do them. In fact, I think they are waste of time. Swagbucks is a huge site with over 12 million users and the chances of you actually winning a sweepstake is statistically unlikely. If you like playing the lottery you may enjoy this, but if you would rather get gift cards then I wouldn’t participate.
That’s Great, But How Much Is A Swag Buck Worth?
The value of your swag bucks fluctuates depending on the prize you redeem. For example if you were to redeem your bucks for a $5.00 Walmart e-gift card it would cost you 500 swag bucks making them a penny each. If however you redeem your swagbucks for a $5.00 Amazon e-gift card it would cost you only 500 bucks. This by the way is your best value in general for you swag bucks, and they are then worth 1.11 cents each.
Now I can see some of you rolling your eyes and thinking, you mean I have to do all that to earn a penny?! To that I have to say….yes. HOWEVER, there is a right way and a wrong way to do Swagbucks and if you do it the wrong way then it isn’t worth the effort. If you do it the right way then you can easily make $30.00 a month in about 5-10 minutes a day. And, there are a lot of people out there making much, much more than that each month. The little things really do add up.
I also think that many of you know by now that not only would I not waste my time doing something that didn’t give me a decent return on my time investment but I wouldn’t suggest you do the same.
*Update: Starting March 1st, 2015 Swagbucks is making changes to their payment system. Each swag buck is still worth a penny but they have stopped offering the $5.00 Amazon e-gift cards for 450 swag bucks. It will now cost you 500 swag bucks to redeem the Amazon gift card. Even with this change I still believe that Swagbucks is a worthwhile program and that it is still an easy way to earn a little extra money each month.
