This week KC and AJ’s schools were holding their meet the teacher night. The boys had a great time getting to see their classrooms and being introduced to their teachers. We have a bit more back to school shopping to do before school officially starts next week, but the countdown has begun.
AJ had his meet the teacher night this past Wednesday. As many of my long time readers know, my 3 year old has Childhood Language Apraxia and has the verbal skills of a 6-12 month old. He can say only about a dozen words including love you, all done, and no. This year we are enrolling him in the Early Childhood Special Education program where they focus on speech and communication. I was so happy to find out that the speech therapist AJ had since he was 18 months old would be their class room therapist this year. The same speech therapist also happened to be KC’s speech therapist and has been a part of our family for the past 3 years.
They are doing a Super Hero’s class room theme this year as most of the students are boys. AJ’s class only has six children in it which is great, since they will each be able to get some individual attention that way.
Last night it was KC’s turn to visit his new school and meet his teacher Ms. V. This year KC will be in Begindergarten, this program is a mixture of Preschool and Kindergarten. He will be in a small class with only 11 kids which will allow him to get a little extra help on those subjects he needs. The teacher Ms. V seems like a fun person with lots of great ideas on how to make this a wonderful year for our son.
After leaving KC’s class room we explored the elementary library. The boys loved the fish tank, the books and the computers that were “my size” as KC put it. Next was the gym, where they had different booths set up full of information on activities and sports the kids could get involved with.
One thing we were excited to find for KC was the Release program. If you’re not familiar with the Release program, it’s where kids are released from school a couple of times a month so that they can go to a religious class. My husband and I both participated in the program when it was a weekly option. I honestly thought it would have been band a long time ago with how crazy our country is getting but that is something for another day. We jumped at the opportunity to sign him up.
I think this is going to be a great school year for both of the boys, and can’t wait to see all the fun things they will get to learn.
