October is my favorite month of the year. The air is becoming cooler, I can bring out my favorite sweaters, the leaves are changing, there is the smell of falling leaves and earth in the air. October is also full of free or low cost things you can do as a family. The changing of the season may mean you need to bundle the family up, but there are still plenty of things to do outdoors.
Try These Five Fun Family Activities!
Go To The Pumpkin Patch – Taking our boys to pick out their pumpkin is on of my favorite October activities. They are typically several fun things to do at the pumpkin patch like hayrides, a petting zoo, or even a corn maze.
Watching the kids go from pumpkin to pumpkin in search of “the best one” is a lot of fun too. The inspection process to find that perfect pumpkin can take awhile but is so worth spending the time watching them just to see the seance of pride the kids have over picking their very own pumpkin.
Go On A scavenger Hung – Now that fall is here it is the perfect opportunity to go exploring. Create a list of things to find that are unique for the fall. Your list may include finding red, yellow, brown and orange leaves. Perhaps it includes finding pine cones, acorns, or a feather from a bird who is flying south for a winter retreat. The list for your scavenger hunt is only limited by your imagination.
Go On A Color Tour – One of my favorite things about the fall is the beautiful changing leaves. Depending on where you live and how the season is progressing early October is the best time to see the beautiful colored leaves. Pack a pick-nick and spend an afternoon driving in the country. If you don’t know when the peak color will be in your area a simple Google search will fill you in on when and where to see the best colors in your state.
Make A Bird Feeder – If you found pine cones (medium to large in size) on your scavenger hunt you can easily turn them into bird feeders! All you need is some ribbon or string to use as a hanger, peanut butter and birdseed. Cover your pine cone in the peanut butter, be generous and then roll it in the birdseed. Your feathered friends will thank you for it!
Go Trick-Or-Treating – It wouldn’t be the October Five Fun Family Activity list without mentioning Halloween! Dressing the kids up and going trick-or-treating is a fun way to end the month. If your not the type of family to go haunting the neighborhood for treats, you could celebrate by having your very own Halloween party (even if it is just you and the kids) dress up and watch family friendly Halloween movies, make fun snacks, hang out and have fun!
