The holidays are over and the cold reality of winter has set in. This is the time of year, for me at least, when it is the long slow march to warmer weather and sunny days. More often than not I find myself beginning to feel the winter blues around the middle of January, and believe it or not your kids can get them too! Thankfully there are lots of ways to beat the winter blues, and I am going to share 15 of them with you today.
15 Easy Ways To Beat The Winter Blues
Eat Citrus ~ There is something about the bright colors of oranges, lemons and limes that can make you feel like it’s summer in your mouth. The added bonus is that by displaying it in a pretty bowl it can make your room feel more cheerful!
Try A Pinterest Project ~ There are so many cool and fun things to do on Pinterest. Why not find one that interest you and give it a shot!
Write A Letter To Your Grandmother ~ Written letters have almost become a lost art form these days. Spending a little time writing a letter to a loved one can brighten both your days.
Have A Family Camp-Out ~ Dig out blankets, sleeping bags, and pillows. Pop some popcorn or make your favorite snack then hunker down and watch your favorite family movie. Depending on the age of your kids they may even enjoy spending the night in their makeshift cap site.
Go For A Walk ~ Getting out of the house and taking a brisk walk is a great way to get fresh air and reenergize. A winter walk can be beautiful with the snow covered trees and bushes. Take your camera along you never know what you may find.
Do A Fun Family Activity ~ There are lots of fun activities your family can do both inside and outside this time of year. Many are free or low cost and can give you hours of fun.
Go On A Family Date Night ~ Kids can get antsy being cooped up during the winter months. Help your kids beat the winter blues by spending the day away from home. Take them to a children’s museum, a kid friendly movie, or even roller skating.
Date Your Spouse ~ Going on a date with your spouse is not only a great distraction from the winter weather but it gives you some time to reconnect as a couple. Your date night can be as simple as a movie and dinner or a trip to an art museum.
Make A New Dish ~ Getting creative in the kitchen can take you to a far off country without leaving the house. Find a new recipe you think your family will enjoy and get creating. If there are simple steps in the preparation you could turn it into a family affair by getting the kids involved as well.
Work On Your Resolutions ~ If you’re like the majority of Americans you have made at least one New Year’s resolution. With the cold temperatures outside, now is a great time to get started on tackling your goals.
Get Organized ~ The start of a new year often gives people the motivation to do the things they have been putting off. However, if you live in the northern states the cold often makes us want to hibernate instead. Try making a list of projects that need done around the house this year and get started on the ones that you can do while the winter weather is keeping you cooped up indoors.
Visit A Friend ~ Why not help you and your friend by spending the afternoon together. Pick a favorite activity that you both enjoy and have a girls (or guys) day. It can be even more fun if you are friends with another couple, and can get out and do something. Even if it’s hanging out and playing cards. Just having company can brighten someone’s day.
Have A Party ~ Just because the holidays are over doesn’t mean you have to put away your party shoes. Hosting a small gathering is a fun way to brighten everyone’s day. Try hosting a potluck, a winter campfire (something my family loves to do), or a simple dinner party.
Start A Hobby ~ The colder weather often means spending more time indoors, so now would be a great time to start that hobby you have always wanted too. Set aside some time for yourself and get started! Want to take a cooking class? Now is the time to do it. How about scrapbooking, the winter is a great time to get elbow deep in photos and glue. Interested in starting a blog of your own, it’s easier than you think just follow my simple instructions to get going!
